Abstract

Purpose: This study was to identify the effectiveness of nursing Counseling and Reality therapy which was implemented by nursing students for 2 weeks at GUniversity hospital in J City. Method: A Quasi-experimental research one group pretest-posttest design was used in this study. The Subjects were 59 psychiatric patients who were assigned to nursing students.
The instrument of this study was the Stiles & Snow´s the Session Evaluation Questionare (SEQ, 1984, 1989). The data were collected from May. 6th. 2002 to June. 28th. 2003, and analyzed with descriptive statistics and paired-t test.
Results :
1. In degree of counseling effectiveness, the scores of nursing counseling(after) were smoothness 28.4, depth 26.9, positivity 27.4, and arousal 16.2, and the scores of reality therapy(after) were smoothness 28.9, depth 28.2, positivity 29.2 and arousal 17.9. The score of arousal was the lowest in both nursing counseling and reality therapy.
2. To identify the counseling effectiveness of nursing counseling and reality therapy between before and after. paired West was used.
In paired t-test, scores of smoothness, Depth, Positiveness and Arousal were significant differences between before and after Nursing Counseling and Reality Therapy centered Psychiatric nursing practice.
Conclusion: This results suggest that perceptive counseling effectiveness of psychiatric inpatients counseled with the nursing counseling and reality therapy centered Psychiatric nursing practice was higher than before. Therefore, we recommend that nursing students should be trained with the nursing counseling and reality therapy program during psychiatric ward practice.
